Oh but you're absolutely right. We don't need any jokes targeting fat people just because they're fat—those jokes are useless. The same goes for white people, trans people, and every other demographic.

The only type of humor I'm defending here is the one used as a vehicle for insight and understanding. In the same way we'd use metaphors to explain concepts. The only difference is in the emotional landscape: metaphors are cathartic; humor is explosive and incongruous.

Chappelle is an example: he uses satire and irony to traverse difficult topics. He doesn't use humor to punch down on people. He uses jokes for insight.

I would only laugh at a fat jokes if it helps me understand something about their experience. I frankly find the others too obvious and uninspired anyway.
