I guess you *can* make an RSS your own reader, but for Medium I make the point of reading here to give reading time, claps and comments and accolades to do my little part in teaching the algorithm what I think is worth reading.
It's also useful to unify content across the web—youtube channels, websites, and the like. I use the free version of Inoreader and it's more than enough. Think of it as going to a single site instead of having a folder full of bookmarks.
But I wouldn't use it to organize Medium content if this interface wasn't designed straight out of a Saw movie. I want choice, control, a *true* overview of everything I follow—literally not rocket science. But we don't have that, so the RSS workaround has to work fine for now. Cheers!
