And well I couldn't more strongly agree with your premise here. Through work we find meaning and significance indeed. Surely it is our duty to secure resources, create significance, et caetera, et caetera.
My only remark is that these are all moral arguments. Not evolutionary or psychological ones — that's what I was kinda going for.
In a literal sense I see work as a way to "entertain the mind." As a way of fun even (you and I share the same disdain for excess and meaninglessness, trust me).
But I don't think entertaining the mind with ideas like the Library of Babel is excessive or meaningless. Only a fun way to work the ol' brainbox, to make us think and ponder. To keep the mind occupied for the same reason muscles need to be persistently used: the prevention of atrophy.
This discussion of ours hardly accomplishes anything morally meaningful, and yet here we are enjoying it (I can't hear any societies dissolving yet, I think we're safe).
